Resolution Revolution

Happy first day of 2014! Oh, shhhh. I’ll be quieter if you’re hung over.

I don’t know if you are like a like a lot of my FaceBook friends are (apparently). I’m seeing a lot of hubbub about the pointlessness of New Year’s Resolutions, calling them “artificial constructs” or suggesting setting resolutions carry no weight in their lives.

That’s fair. I made my own New Year’s Resolution joke on Twitter.

(I blame @midnight – a show which I’ve come to adore, by the way).

That said, I had a minute to reflect on my last year’s pseudo-goals and even with those barely acknowledged motivations, I managed to somehow “get there”. So what if I’d been bold enough to state what I wanted and really pursue it?

After all, these aren’t New Year’s Wishes. These are Resolutions. These are things which require resolve. They don’t just happen. And yes, if you’re not the kind of person who sees the point in setting goals and working towards them, then the whole thing doesn’t make sense.

But then, if you’re that “cynical and cool” person (I’ve been that person, I’m trying not to be that person anymore) then you’re the type to whom life just “happens”.

I’m learning it doesn’t pay to be a passive spectator to your own life, however. It’s better to work towards something you want. Even if you don’t get that something, you will learn valuable lessons along the way, and if you have to close the book on that chapter in your life, at least you can do it with no regrets, knowing you did everything you could. But better than that – what if you get there?

So, what do I want to accomplish in 2014?

So there they are. Four specific goals and two general goals. All manageable with a plan of action. No wishing necessary!

  1. In regards to running, I’ve always believed that it’s the journey we take to achieve our goals, that is the richest part of the achievement. It’s where we learn of our failings, we adjust and monitor our growth. Whether we achieve a specific goal, or get pretty close to it, it’s all done in the training. I enjoy the journey. I’ve never subscribed to the “I want it now” culture.

    This year, I want a 2:20 or better half marathon.
